SALEM, Ore. — Linfield University defeated Willamette University 4-1 on Sunday at Sparks Field. The Wildcats capitalized on a dominant second half, scoring three goals to secure the victory. The Bearcats managed one goal in the second half but could not overcome Linfield's lead.
The first half began with a strong defensive stand by Willamette's goalkeeper, Siera Edwards, who made two crucial saves early on, including a shot by Jocelyn Jacobs in the third minute. Despite her efforts, Reese Jones found the net for Linfield in the 19th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Willamette's attack saw several attempts, notably from Samantha Rodriguez and Wendy Guarneros, but the Linfield defense held firm, maintaining their slim advantage into the break.
The second half began with Erin Denney leveling the score for the Bearcats in the 53rd minute with a well-placed goal following consecutive corner kicks. However, the Wildcats quickly responded with a scoring surge, netting three goals between the 56th and 58th minutes, with Jenna Stanley, Amalia Tufts, and Jones each finding the back of the net. Despite several attempts, including shots by Claire Warthen and Rodriguez, Willamette was unable to overcome the deficit, and the half concluded with a 4-1 scoreline in favor of Linfield.
Denney scored the Bearcats' goal, taking two shots with one on target. Edwards played a full 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves from 12 shots faced. Rodriguez was active in the attack, attempting three shots with two on goal. Kailea Buckley made an impact from defense with one shot on goal.
Looking ahead, the Bearcats will travel to Spokane, WA, to face Whitworth University on Saturday, September 20. The match is set for a noon kickoff.
